Wandering New England, Politics is THE Top Sport Here

(Providence, Rhode Island)

I'm sorry my "Sunday Blog" is one day late! I am enjoying taking long walks on Sundays before I go to work. One thing I love about New England--as I loved when I was in Europe--is the beauty of the historic churches. I like to take pictures; and the beauty above is the Beneficent Congregational Church in downtown Providence, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year!

It has been a crazy ten days in Providence. I have been here ten days, and half of my time has been spent on the titanic political race between Republican Scott Brown and Democrat Martha Coakley. I interviewed Senator John Kerry today in New Bedford, along with the Fall River GOP chairman. Take a look at my "live" report on ABC6 at: http://www.abc6.com/news/81964632.html

I have learned a lot in over thirty years of covering politics. One of the main lessons is that "If you assume you'll win, chances are you will lose!" Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Giuliani learned that hard lesson in the 2008 Presidential campaign. The process is a nomination, not a coronation! Democrat Martha Brown and her party in Massachusetts may learn that very lesson this year. We'll find out Tuesday night!

Check in often here. My reports are also posted on the WLNE-TV6 (ABC) website at www.abc6.com.

Isn't it ironic -- or at least interesting -- that your first big assignment upon moving to Rhode Island is an election in a different state?
